Teaching Color Mixing with Crayola Model Magic

Image
My students LOVE to work with Crayola model magic clay but I always struggled with using it to teach certain concepts. However, in recent years, I discovered a lot of great and low-stress ways to use the model magic in my classroom to teach color mixing!  I cut packs of primary colors into 1/4 and distributed them to each student. Instructing them not to mix colors all together, etc.  Students then break each primary color into 3 pieces and mix 2 together to get their secondary color. It's a super simple but effective way to get students to understand color mixing.  There are some great books like "Mouse Paint" which can go along with the lesson. Also, White model magic can be colored with marker and the ink mixed in to create colors if you do not have colored model magic.  It can also be used to teach mixing tints!

Arts in school Art Show

Image
In May we always have our annual school art show. This year we did continents as a theme and each grade level studied about different cultures and their art. Art club made hot air balloons out of paper mache and had toilet paper food sculptures. So, we turned the art room into a cafe! Here are some pictures of our fabulous art show! Toilet paper food! Kindergarten projects were aboriginal dot paintings, masks, and x-ray baramunda fish

Carton 2 Garden contest

My art club kids have been collaborating with our recycling team to create a recycled garden. We used milk cartons from our cafeteria and all kinds of recyclables to create a rain forest themed garden. We are amazed at the progress in which our plants are growing! The students are enjoying watching our garden grow. We planted beans, flowers, and watermelon seeds. Hopefully we will win the carton2garden spring 2016 contest!  Here are some pictures of our project:
