Art Room Decorations

I am blessed to have an amazing art room with lots of natural light and beautiful windows. Several friends had tagged me on a picture on facebook with a paint can window treatment, so I just had to try it! I am loving the results! I just asked our cafeteria manager to save me the large cans and our custodian drilled some holes for me to hang them. I have also included my door decoration, which I created with ideas inspired by T. Matthews blog. Thanks for the inspiration!

Toilet paper sculpting!

Yes, that is the correct title of this post! Earlier this year I went to a workshop where one of the ideas was to sculpt with toilet paper. The trick is to barely wet one side of the paper then let the water soak or seep into the toilet paper. You can shape it, let dry, & when it dries it will hold its shape & can be painted. I decided to teach pop art and Wayne Theibaud with this lesson. So, 5th grade students are creating their favorite food. This is still a project in progress....more pics soon! I started everyone with sculpting a simple egg, then we painted them green & various other colors. The timing worked out great for Dr. Suess read across America!

Tissue Paper Masks

I've been enjoying Inservice with my fellow Clarksville Elementary art teachers for the last few days, here are some great tissue paper masks we have been making. This was super easy to do, and I can't wait to try it with my students! You pre-cut tissue paper strips then apply glue into a mask form and do about 3 layers of glue and tissue. We chose to do either warm, cool, or neutral colors. After the masks were dry we popped them out of the forms, glued them to a construction paper background and added embellishments.

Teaching Color Mixing with Crayola Model Magic

 My students LOVE to work with Crayola model magic clay but I always struggled with using it to teach certain concepts. However, in recent years, I discovered a lot of great and low-stress ways to use the model magic in my classroom to teach color mixing!  I cut packs of primary colors into 1/4 and distributed them to each student. Instructing them not to mix colors all together, etc.  Students then break each primary color into 3 pieces and mix 2 together to get their secondary color. It's a super simple but effective way to get students to understand color mixing.  There are some great books like "Mouse Paint" which can go along with the lesson. Also, White model magic can be colored with marker and the ink mixed in to create colors if you do not have colored model magic.  It can also be used to teach mixing tints!
